American White Water Lily (Nymphaea ordorata)
The white water lily is currently an endgangered species in CT. It used to thrive in the area and was used by Native Americans as a potent medicine. With strong antibiotic and astringent properties (from the tannic and gallic acid found in the plant tissue) it was widely used externlly as infusions to treat lesions and inflammations with mucous memranes, and as poultices to treat a variety of dermatological conditions.
A cousin of the Lotus, its fogetten symbolic meaning this side of the pond is profound.
